This diagram illustrates the process behind creating a project, which is
key for defining concepts and innovating upon them. A concept may
shift between the three phases of ideation, prototyping, and iteration
many times before it is finalized.
research
The foundation of any design process - prior to starting a project, I find
some precedents and other research. This helps to set the tone and
identify stakeholders, relationships and components, to see how others
have approached the same problem.
precedents
empathizing
Empathizing is vital to a human-centred design process, especially when dealing with any complex problem. It allows me to set aside my preconceived assumptions to gain insight into the users, their lived experience, and their needs. This ultimately leads to creating a solution that is viable and revolves around the users.
defining
Framing the problem outlines valuable insights into an objective and
pieces the findings together. It shows the gaps for innovation based on
the research conducted.
how might we eliminate internalized misogyny
through identifying sources of shame?
design statement
Develop a mobile application that creates a community for all women that have experienced internalized misogyny from others or themselves. With a community forum and resources, women are able to share their lived experiences and showcase their vulnerability.
considerations
Being mindful of inclusive language
Easily accessible for anyone
opportunities
Giving communities and the people whose perspectives have been cast off in the mainstream a platform to express themselves
Empower women through validating their lived experiences
constraints
Time to develop and iterate concept/wireframes
User testing of the app
audience
All women and girls
Those looking to educate themselves about internalized misogyny
ideating
Once I’ve identified target users, their needs, and a clear problem statement to solve, it’s time to brainstorm possible solutions. For this stage, I held an ideation session on Google Jamboard and mapped out my research on a board, to generate some ideas.
storyboarding
Storyboarding illustrates a concept by visualizing users' interactions with a product or service. They provide more context into a user's journey to understand the problem at a glance. Here, I have sketched mine out as a low-fidelity prototype.
low fidelity prototyping
This stage transforms ideas into something tangible to test on users. This test drives the solution and further investigates the usability of the product, to gather feedback on their thought process. Prototyping also highlights any other problems that may come up for future iterations to be addressed. For this project, I created a mockup of the mobile application.
